Canadian Quality Criteria /
Framework for Business Excellence

The Canadian Quality Criteria / Framework for Business Excellence, developed by the National Quality Institute (NQI), is a comprehensive, practical and well-tested framework for improvement. Based on the Quality Principles, the original private sector Criteria has been adapted for the public sector as well. The Criteria forms the basis for the evaluation of Manitoba Quality Awards and Canada Awards for Excellence programs, and is used by organizations of all sizes and in all sectors across Canada.

The Canadian Quality Criteria / Framework for Business Excellence includes the following sections:

Section 1: Leadership
Section 2: Planning
Section 3: Customer / Client Focus
Section 4: People Focus
Section 5: Process Management
Section 6: Supplier / Partner Focus
Section 7: Organizational Performance

In order to assist organizations in developing a strategic approach to an improvement effort that will bring desired results, the NQI developed an Interpretive Guide for the Canadian Quality Criteria / Framework for Business Excellence (note: - separate Guides available for the Private Sector and Public Sector). The Guide explains every element of the Quality Criteria by which you would be examined in the Quality Fitness Test, Manitoba Quality Awards and the Canada Awards for Excellence.

Organizations that wish to assess themselves against the Canadian Quality Criteria / Framework for Business Excellence can take the Quality Fitness Test (QFT) (note: separate QFTs are available for the Private Sector, Public Sector, Small Business and Non-Profit / Associations). The QFT includes a series of check sheets in a workbook that is completed by people from different areas in your organization. It is designed to:

  • Identify your organization's strengths and opportunities for improvement
  • Lay the groundwork for your quality improvement plan
  • Give guidance on all aspects of assessment
  • Determine your readiness to apply for the Manitoba Quality Awards or the Canada Awards for Excellence
